Photos from Anime Matsuri of my Sonic Rainboom Rarity costume!
Ugh, I changed my makeup from the last time because whatever I was doing made my face look terribad and now this makeup is even worse! I can’t do crazy drag queen eyes, I guess. Gonna have to tone it down a bit next time: I’d rather look good and a bit inaccurate than have a freaky face (more so than the usual).
I probably shouldn’t have worn Rarity to Anime Matsuri: the con floor had NO SPACE to maneuver, it was a nightmare. I honestly spent most of my time sidling around the venue, not joking: shuffling sideways in fuck-tall heel and stupid-huge wings was neither fun nor easy.
I wanted to enter the AM Cosplay Contest but they didn’t have at-the-con sign ups, oddly (it would have been my first contest too).
Gah, I just want to wrangle a full photoshoot with this costume then I can cannibalized the parts for other projects.
The very few photos I took at Anime Matsuri! I didn’t have my camera on me most of the time and when I did navigating that hellhole of a convention was already neigh impossible in my costumes without trying to stop and take a photo (seriously, that was the worst possible venue, just horrible).
If it isn’t clear I pretty much only bust out my camera or bother to flag down folks who are cosplaying little-known series: my favorite part of cosplaying in general is fangirling about niche things that no one else I know likes (much to the annoyance of anyone walking around with me as I tend to get into proper conversations when I do catch these rare gems). People with awesome costumes from more popular stuff are sure to get a bunch of attention so I save my love for the things that I don’t thing are getting the appreciation that they deserve (trying really hard not to venture in to metahipster territory here).
OH! There was also a Forest Antimony from Gunnerkrigg walking around but I didn’t get to take a photo! Soooo, if that was you or you know her do send her my direction because I can’t get enough Gunnerkrigg friends!
I wish I’d taken more photos with my pals/talked to more people! Everything just gets so hectic during cons, so many things slip through the cracks.
I also wore Daenerys on friday but I’ll do a separate post for that and, in all likelihood, AM Black Widow and Rarity photosets too (for all the good photos I’ve found thus far).
Samurai Pizza Kitten and I stayed though the World Cosplay Summit USA Finals and OH MY GOD IT WAS GLORIOUS. Watching those skits was incredibly inspiring; I’ve never really had an interest in doing a skit until this point and now I wanna do ALL OF THEM. I have no doubt that my enthusiasm will evaporate shortly but, at present, I am brimming with all sorts of neat ideas (with out being too deluded into thinking that I’ll actually pull them off).
Some Afest Progress for you peeps.
I’ve been too busy crafting/being unwell to really spend much time online but here, have some junk photos.
Raven Wig: Cut and loosly styled, I’m making the widows peek right now and once I install that the M-peaks will be a fair bit taller and I’ll clean up the angles on the cut. Oh man, I was so nervous, this is the first wig I’ve done more than trimmed. EEeeeeeeeee.
Rarity Shoes: NOW WITH PURPLE GLITTER. CAN YOU EVEN HOLD ALL THIS FABULOUS??? I CAN’T.
Ghetto Progress of Raven from several days ago: I took this when I was trying to decide how much fabric to use on my cloak, hence the random ribbons and gathering and all the other ugly stuff. The belt is just my Black Widow belt as a place holder, I haven’t put together my Raven Belt yet. I made my leotard from scratch (yay me) but I still need to cleanup so of the seams in install the crotch snap. Ignore my ugly naked legs, I didn’t get my tights until yesterday and I never intened to post this photo. Not a very good indication of how this costume is going to look but I don’t have time/feel like putting on the thing again. Oh and the blue is faaaaaaaaar darker than it looks here: the flash totally washed it out. It is a fantastic deep blue and it is perfect. :3
Raven Resin Gems: For my belt, cloak clasp and hands. I did my first polyester resin cast (I’ve done a bit of epoxy before ) two days ago and lemme tell you how powerfully nasty that stench was. Pretty sure I may be a little poisened. I didn’t add much dye because I’m backing these with red anyway and I didn’t want to mess up the ratio of the resin. The gem closest to the camera is ugly and jagged because I… was playing with it at work and kept dropping it. Yes, I am a child, how did you know??
Ice King Nose: Well the prosthetic I ordered weeks ago wasn’t going to get here on time due to -reasons- so I had to try my hand at making my own. Not sure how this is going to turn out but progress nevertheless.

I think this is probably the best photo that I dug up after Akon of my Rarity costume (although, now that I think about it I don’t think I ever finished going through those galleries…!)

I edited hairline of my wig but I don’t recall any other big changes. I probably should color correct but I haven’t installed PS on this laptop yet so lolohwell.
I need more photos of this costume! Eeerugh.
I should also post the photos that I do have in a not-wait-forever fashion.

A bunch of wonderful folks on facebook are linking me to photos they found in the A-kon galleries of my Rarity.
So many good shots for random convention pics, they are soo pretty.
However, at the same time, I am so very upset that in the vast majority of them my hair is creeping out from under the wig.
Stupid goddamn shitty bullshit fake nails made it unpossible for me to get the wig on correctly or fix it once it started to slip.
So upset, you guys just don’t even know!

The line she sings is “I’m making my make, making my mark in high society”. It felt silly and fitting since the Asker mentioned ‘creme de la creme’, another quote from the same song.
I’m in the progess of tagging those Asks at the moment and I’d planned to clarify that I do not think myself all that grand but, clearly, you have beat me to it, Anon.
I’d suggest you look at a lot of humanized pony fan art to get a rough grasp of what you want. Once you have a basic idea of the sort of look you’d like to go for then hit up the local thrift stores and see if you can find anything similar.
As far as hair goes, I can’t stress enough how much better wigs are on the whole. Go with wigs, every time! You will thank your self for it in the future when you see photos.
False eyelashes are also extremely helpful, since, even if you have natually long lashes, falsies really make them pop in photos.

I think these are the two best photos I have so far so I cleaned them up (even though I’m not great with PS. My hairline looks weird/bad in the upclose one since I poorly edited out the bits of hair that were creeping out from under the wig. :V )
Sadly you can’t see just how much glitter I’ve got on in any of the photos!
Seriously, I had glitter all over half my face, like a psudo domino mask or something. Not the little shimmer stuff either, I’m talking about the standard sized glitter squares.
