OPEN FRONT DRESS TUTORIAL

kelsothedancingllama:

uhm. this is gonna be kinda sucky cos its after the fact but hey. alota people are asking how i did my skirt :3 so.

OPEN FRONT

i started out with a 6 hoop crinoline.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=6+hoop+crinoline&_sacat=0&_from=R40

then i cut open the front a bit. LEAVE THE TOP HOOP INTACT.(dont cut the wires. not yet.)also. your going to have to cut out alot more than you think because it will collapse alot. but start off small to avoid mistakes!

image

i then sewed on a layer. (with the extra fabric i cut out so it matched) and added a stronger and thicker hoop. i made this hoop out of a long bendy piece of plastic, but since it just wanted to push out straight again it popped out wrong. soooo. i added some metal on the edges to make it curve in correctly.

image

(i made yall a little diagram :3)

then judging on how much you want it to open, cut accordingly and hem the edges! (when you cut the wires, push them taunt to get a nice curve on the dress) i got something like this!

image

now. some people were also asking about draping. so these are some pics of what it looks like undernesath??? sorry im not more helpful.

^^this is how i pinned it. then just tack it where the pins are with some stitches!

Photos from Anime Matsuri of my Sonic Rainboom Rarity costume!

Ugh, I changed my makeup from the last time because whatever I was doing made my face look terribad and now this makeup is even worse! I can’t do crazy drag queen eyes, I guess. Gonna have to tone it down a bit next time: I’d rather look good and a bit inaccurate than have a freaky face (more so than the usual).

I probably shouldn’t have worn Rarity to Anime Matsuri: the con floor had NO SPACE to maneuver, it was a nightmare. I honestly spent most of my time sidling around the venue, not joking: shuffling sideways in fuck-tall heel and stupid-huge wings was neither fun nor easy.

I wanted to enter the AM Cosplay Contest but they didn’t have at-the-con sign ups, oddly (it would have been my first contest too).
Gah, I just want to wrangle a full photoshoot with this costume then I can cannibalized the parts for other projects.

Tweaked my Daenerys costume for Anime Matsuri, except it ended up with too much boob. :c
It went from unflattering tit curtain to excess boob, although I like how I refitted the midriff.

I’ve got more fabric, hope I have time to try again before I wear it next.
Aaaaand I still need to properly style my wig.

The very few photos I took at Anime Matsuri! I didn’t have my camera on me most of the time and when I did navigating that hellhole of a convention was already neigh impossible in my costumes without trying to stop and take a photo (seriously, that was the worst possible venue, just horrible).

If it isn’t clear I pretty much only bust out my camera or bother to flag down folks who are cosplaying little-known series: my favorite part of cosplaying in general is fangirling about niche things that no one else I know likes (much to the annoyance of anyone walking around with me as I tend to get into proper conversations when I do catch these rare gems). People with awesome costumes from more popular stuff are sure to get a bunch of attention so I save my love for the things that I don’t thing are getting the appreciation that they deserve (trying really hard not to venture in to metahipster territory here).

OH! There was also a Forest Antimony from Gunnerkrigg walking around but I didn’t get to take a photo! Soooo, if that was you or you know her do send her my direction because I can’t get enough Gunnerkrigg friends!

I wish I’d taken more photos with my pals/talked to more people! Everything just gets so hectic during cons, so many things slip through the cracks.

I also wore Daenerys on friday but I’ll do a separate post for that and, in all likelihood, AM Black Widow and Rarity photosets too (for all the good photos I’ve found thus far).

Samurai Pizza Kitten and I stayed though the World Cosplay Summit USA Finals and OH MY GOD IT WAS GLORIOUS. Watching those skits was incredibly inspiring; I’ve never really had an interest in doing a skit until this point and now I wanna do ALL OF THEM. I have no doubt that my enthusiasm will evaporate shortly but, at present, I am brimming with all sorts of neat ideas (with out being too deluded into thinking that I’ll actually pull them off).

WE GOT TO MEET GEORGE RR MARTIN AND I AM THE MOST EXCITED OF PERSONS.

The Boyfriend and I drove down to College Station, TX last night in order to so to GRRM’s signing today. After the signing/interview/Q&A we stalked him for about half an hour and recruted a nice young fellow with a nice camera to snap a shot.
Then I moved a decent space away and jumped around in spinning circles with the ugliest grin plastered all over my face. I couldn’t help it, I tried, I swear!

I really wanted to have the Qarth dress done but things just weren’t working out so I was forced to backburner it and slop together Daenery’s Dothraki garb. It turned out pretty allllright, though the whole thing is held together with safety pins (and unsafe straight pins..!) and the top is entirely unflattering. I didn’t get to add the finishing touched to Jon’s costume ether, sadly, due to time: I missing the buckles on his…tunic thing and I want to make him a better belt+sheath for Longclaw (which was also throw together in a hurry and needs some help too, although the I’m kinda proud of the wolf head sculpt). I didn’t get to properly style my wig either so the braids are just a we-check-out-of-this-hotel-in-10min-Who-needs-reference-anyway type thing.

That is probably enough words I guess?
I know I tend to go on at length about things that no one cares about; you folks are probably just here for the pics anyway~

Got GRRM to sign things and HE TALKED TO MEEEEEE.

I got my Daenerys wig in last weekend and forgot to post photos!
(Oh and my lenses arrived a few days before that).

I haven’t properly styled the wig, I just pulled it back a bit in a makeshift style when I first tried it on. Same story with my makeup: just a sloppy application of some liner+lashes (didn’t even bother to glue them down) and a stroke of mascara, not a proper make up test. The wig is insanely long and lovely so I’m trying to decide if I want to even try to curl it at all or leave it with the loose waves it has going on (which aren’t clear in the photos).

OH! And if any of you are Texas local GRRM is going to be in College Station at A&M for an exhibit at their library and a signing at Aggie-con this coming weekend (~March 22/23). He is doing a lecture at the Exhibit but it is already sold out, sadly (I would have had tickets too, if my roommate and her boyfriend were in the least bit considerate and/or not assholes [is it obvious that I’m a bit perturbed?]).

I thrift too much so now every time I go to do any Real Shopping all I can think is “$50?! I won’t play $5 for those boots!”

I dunno about you guys but I like to look at my cosplay pictures if only to remind myself that I hold the potential to look great.

I spend 97% of my non-cosplay time at home looking like a fat hobo (when I bother with clothing).

It just takes effort to look nice and I’d rather spend my time getting to a save point, reading til the next chapter or refreshing tumblr than putting on make up and fixing my hair.

Not that I am faulting gals who take the time to do this! I honestly think that they’ve probably got their priorities much straighter than my own.

I hate going out when I look wretched but, as I mentioned, I am often too lazy to look decent so instead I sit at home and do nothing.
